For Greater Wellbeing

Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive form of bodywork developed to reduce the body’s stress levels and relieve acute or chronic pain. It stimulates and supports the body’s natural abilities to heal itself. Bowen Therapy benefits people of all ages and physical abilities.

Bowen works with the body to:

  • Reset the autonomic nervous system into the deep relaxation and healing mode
  • Improve recovery time from surgery or injury from sports or accident
  • Release fascia and muscle tension
  • Improve skeletal alignment for better joint mobility and posture
  • Improve circulation
  • Stimulate the lymphatic system
  • Improve the immune system
  • Improve hydration and nutrient absorption
  • Restore the natural flow of vital energy (Chi)
  • Readjust hormone levels helping to restore chemical balance
  • Promote holistic balance physically and emotionally

What to expect

Bowen work consists of a series of gentle rolling moves on specific areas of the body. Frequent pauses in-between allow the body time to fully respond. Each person will respond differently, healing at their own pace. You lie on a treatment table or are seated. Bowen moves are performed either on the skin or through light, loose clothing, based on your preference.

During the first session, we will discuss your medical history, reasons for coming, and include a treatment. Each follow-up session begins with an update on how you have responded to the previous one to determine the next course of treatment. Each session is 45-60 minutes. Acute conditions usually respond in 1-3 sessions. Additional sessions may be required for chronic health problems. Sessions are booked 7-10 days apart.

Following treatment, it is recommended that you forgo any other manipulative or energetic therapies for five days as your body is still going through adjustments to re-organize and heal.

Conditions that respond well

  • Musculoskeletal pain such as frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, neck pain, migraines, back pain, sciatica, hip, knee, foot or ankle problems, arthritic pain
  • Digestive disorders including colic
  • Gynaecological problems
  • Respiratory problems
  • Depression, earaches, fibromyalgia and much more

About the Practitioner(s) Barbara Gordon

Barbara Gordon, Bowen Therapist, BODY HARMONICS Pilates Certified Teacher

For six years, I suffered from chronic low back pain. I had to be careful how I got out of bed, how I stepped off a curb, how I sat, how I stood and how I bent down. My life was full of restrictions. I felt old. After trying many therapies over the years I had four sessions of Bowen and my pain melted away. That was 10 years ago. Now I have my life back. I was, and am, so astounded by the subtlety and profound strength of this therapy that I had to find out more. In the process, Bowen Therapy has become the deeply rewarding focus of my life’s work.

Foot Reflexology

Everybody can benefit from Reflexology – natural, non-invasive therapy. It can be used either as a one-off relaxation treatment or on a regular basis in order to target a specific health condition.

Reflexology is a therapy which uses the feet to treat the whole body. A reflexologist looks at the feet as a map to the body. By stimulating the feet through specialized massage techniques, the whole body, especially the excretory and lymphatic systems, function more efficiently, eliminating toxins and impurities.

Benefits

  • Improved posture and gait
  • Reduced pain from bunions and plantar fasciitis
  • Release of endorphins to reduce negative stress

Conditions treated

  • Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Headaches
  • Digestive issues
  • PMS or symptoms of menopause
  • Bunions
  • Plantar fasciitis

What to expect

In a Reflexology session, you will lie on your back in a supported position while the therapist massages and uses specialized thumb and finger techniques to stimulate specific reflex points on both feet. Most people find Reflexology deeply relaxing while undergoing the treatment, and leave feeling light on their feet and energized throughout the whole body.

About the Practitioner(s) Courtney Wood

Courtney certified as a Foot Reflexologist so she could help people heal using her hands. She loves observing the transformation people undergo as she works with the body map of the feet and marvels at the deep sense of relaxation that comes as a result. Whether it is an actual condition of the feet or something going on somewhere else in the body, Foot Reflexology can play an important role in helping us to heal.

  • Therapeutic exercise
  • Manual therapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Taping, muscle stimulation, or other modalities
  • Home exercise and self-care recommendations
Follow up visits will include treatment and re-assessment. Length of follow up visits will depend on your individual treatment plan and what serves you best.

About the Practitioner(s) Frances James

Frances is a dedicated and qualified Registered Massage Therapist living and working in Toronto. Originally from Nova Scotia, Frances came to Toronto to work in the film and television industry as a special effects artist and stop-motion animation technician. After fifteen years in the industry she decided to move into a more nurturing, health-related field. “Why massage? It’s a question I’m often asked. I was always giving neck and shoulder massages to my coworkers, especially in the animation world. When several people recommended I pursue this as an option, I began to look into it seriously. In massage, I finally have the blend of art and science I was looking for. Sculpture and painting have given me excellent palpation skills and the ability to ‘visualize’ the muscles and bone.”

Fascial Stretch Therapy

Fascial Stretch Therapy™ is an assisted table-based stretching system that focuses on the fascia as the key element in achieving optimal flexibility, strength, performance and pain relief.

It opens the joints and surrounding muscles so you move with more ease and less tension. Fascia is the connective tissue that surrounds and invests all structures of the body. The problem is that fascia will thicken and shorten when any of your tissues are under stress from poor posture, lack of exercise, injury, surgery, disease or over-training. FST™ can completely treat inflexible fascia at the deepest level - your joint capsule. We help to make your layers of fascia become more pliable and hydrated, so that your joint range of motion, muscle strength and flexibility immediately improve. This will make it easier for you to train, maintain and enjoy freedom of movement.

Benefits

  • Improved posture
  • Reduction in muscle soreness and tension
  • Reduced risk of injury - especially sprains and strains
  • Release of endorphins to reduce stress

What to expect

The fascial stretch therapy session takes place on a massage table and incorporates comfortable straps used to stabilize the limbs or part of the body that is not being worked on. This facilitates relaxation and enhances the effectiveness of the technique.

MAT (Muscle Activation Technique)

Movement is fundamental to our health. A muscle's ability to contract efficiently is critical for optimal movement.

When muscles don't contract efficiently, range of motion and overall physical performance are compromised. The MAT Specialist is able to determine which muscles lost their ability to contract efficiently. A manual muscle activation technique is then applied to restore the muscle's efficiency. Afterwards, movement in the joint is tested to ensure that the restored range of motion is well balanced with the renewed degree of the muscle's contractability.

Benefits

MAT increases range of motion and strength, improving the overall physical performance. The technique is gentle and non-invasive. It instantly demonstrates how critical the muscle’s ability to contract is to any type of movement.

What to expect

The session takes place on a massage table. It begins with an assessment using various movements and gentle palpations by the MAT Specialist. Then the interplay between a gentle manual muscle activation and re-assessment begins. The technique may feel subtle. However, once you stand and check your range of motion, you realize how profound the results are.

About the Practitioner(s)

Sue-Anne Watkins Sue-Anne is a Certified Muscle Activation Technique Specialist. She studied under MAT Founder, Gregg Roskopf, in Denver, Colorado and received her certification in this exciting new technique in 2009. Having taught yoga and Pilates for 10 years, she has a deep understanding and an abundance of experience working with movement and muscle control. Sue-Anne realizes the difficulty and frustration experienced by people when limited range of motion and weakness hinders their performance in daily activities. She is dedicated in helping you achieve your movement goals.
